Tow bar mounted racks and boxes are becoming more popular, partly of necessity because some vehicles have very low roof carrying limits, but in general because
- they are universal in that they be fitted to any vehicle with a standard tow ball
- there are some loads that are best kept outside the family car, e.g. garden refuse for recycling, or hay bales
